EMV Chip: Increasing Security and Reducing Fraud

Community Bank & Trust is issuing new Visa® Check Cards equipped with computer chips. These chip cards are also called EMV cards. Here's what you need to know.

When will I receive my new card?

You will receive your new Visa Check Card with chip technology once your current card expires.  However, you may request a new chip card before that time if you plan on traveling internationally.

What’s different about these cards?

The biggest difference between the old cards and the new cards is the metal computer chip embedded on the front of the card. The computer chip assigns a unique code for every transaction made on the card making it difficult for unauthorized users to access your personal data and create counterfeit cards.

How are chip cards used?

Instead of swiping the card at the checkout, you’ll insert it into a slot on the front of the chip enabled terminal. The card will remain in the terminal until it’s validated and you’ve either entered your PIN or provided your signature. When the purchase is complete the terminal will prompt you to remove your card.

Where can I use my new chip card?

Your new card can be used at any retailer that accepts Visa since it will have both a magnetic strip and chip. Visa expects roughly half of all merchants to have chip card readers by the end of the year. In the meantime, chip cards may be swiped at checkout as usual to complete a transaction if no chip card terminal is available.
